Loud Yet Rather Subtle - 4/5
A band who remind me of a alternative version of Rage Against The Machine, Exeter trio Abel Archer have released this rather cute looking 3 track EP with a determination to rip out the listeners eardrums in the process.
The opening "Complex Machine" starts off by showing no retaliation - but the fact it only has one guitar to apply the picking pattern makes it seem less heavy in places, which is disguised by the dirty bass playing by Dan Bowskill. But the lack of heaviness really shouldn't count as it stands out well with the anthemic touch of the chorus and the Keith Moon styled drumming by Sam Goodman, before this moment of joy proceeds to a Deftones sounding "Eat The Evidence", which still relies on the successful formula of take-no-prisoners. Rather enjoyable all to say - right until the last rocky track "Priapism in the Workplace" where guitarist and lead vocalist Mark Waterhouse grabs the limelight on the shortest and catchiest song on the EP. Overall, this is great stuff, and if this is just a taster - I cannot wait for an album release by this band.
