Seasons of Love - 4/5
Emerging from Leeds, the Pop-Rock four piece “City of Lights” have a new album coming out on the 27th August 2012. I love all types of music, but pop-rock is one of those genres that’s peppered in clichés. Regardless of which, I gave it a listen, and it was something that wins you over with charisma and wondrous lyrics fairly easily…
“Was it all Worth it?” opens up the album with sweet mellow acoustic and the vocals of Matt Dunwell backed with fantastic musicians and an organ at the end piping in to contribute to the pop-rock feel. Lovers of Biffy Clyro and Snow Patrol will definitely enjoy “Did I stutter”, showing that Matt can sing, scream and shout expertly, with Sean Howey on drums and Ashley Howey on bass working in perfect harmony as they do on the rest of the album, and Alex Humphreys excellent guitar tone. The songs then collect into the love song of “Honestly”, with added violins and a stunning guitar solo and vocal delivery. Biffy Clyro influences literally leak out of “Wake me up” and “Patience”,although it gets to the point of the Matt's acoustic and Alex’s lead guitar fighting for attention, but the beautiful solo in “Patience” happily compensates. “Out of Sight” shows us a piano being brought into the mix of the pop-rock quartet who just happens to write constant love song after another. “Sticks and Stones” introduces a Mika type sound, with Matt once again shows his vocals off; giving us a softer side to what there is to come. “Wait for me” and “Hope”somewhat question their place on being close to last. Being the two
shortest they are (and by far the best songs on the album) it’s strange to see them being third and second to last. The album then finishes with “Landscapes”,
a more Pink Floyd sounding track than anything else, with philosophical lyrics that closely relate to what Biffy Clyro would probably write.
With a sound that guaranteed to fill you with happiness and lyrics that can have whole stadiums chanting within a ten track album of absolute brilliance, City of Lights have virtually nailed it on their first album. Littered with pop-rock vocals, delicious guitar licks and perfectmusicianship, you’d be crazy of not wanting to listen to this
band.
