Pop Punk Power - 4/5
With a sound more loveable than Blink-182, and a general atmosphere more charismatic than Sum 41 that explodes out of just 3 tracks - Independence, MO rising pop punks ‘Cure the Common’ have released a three track EP that by any proportions has the capability to blow minds away in the space of as little as 12 minutes.
It all kicks off with a tasty guitar riff from Derek Garnett in “Hear” right before everyone goes and rushes in, with a brilliant keyboard riff from vocalist/keys player Eric Hintermaier with fascinating lyrics and the aspired Christian rock bass riff of Trevor Bennett that is more like something you’d get from ‘Sister Act’. The only flaw is the drums being mixed in a bit too quiet that eliminates the sound of the bass drum and certain fills you can just briefly pick out – which is generally rather annoying thing throughout the EP. Nethertheless, ‘Cure the Common’ give a solid performance throughout “Carry on” that’s more of a track that’s listened to once and somewhat forgotten apart from the catchy bass riff. This is all elevated back to the bubbly and rather cheerful “Cheer up, Edgar”that has a brilliant use of keys and clean guitars over it. This is a track that I loved upon first hearing it, and would most likely tear up an entire music venue just because of how damn catchy it is.
Overall, this was something I was not expecting. I generally don’t judge a book by its cover, but the name to me suggested more of a hard rock/metal influence. But after having my mind virtually blown from just three tracks, I can’t wait to hear more from these guys in the future.
