Freak? More Like Genius - 4/5
Side projects are seemingly becoming popular. Wesley Cordova from Warrenton, OR has an interesting idea with the side project of “Freaks”and asked for a review with music that has more twist and turns than a roller coaster off of Final Destination. And the end result? Some strange psycadelic tones of Deftones and the power of The Defiled that’s so messed up that it’s actually rather awesome.
Opening track “She’s Broke but not Broken” starts with a Stone Roses feel, narrating a scene of a young girl who abuses drugs with a voice as sweet as honey, before introducing us to some awe inspiring screams that aren’t used in excess to add to the effect. The musicianship on this track, just like the others are just incredible. “If Only I Could Focus” still involves the surreal sweet voice of the EP that is slowly descending into some sort of madness. Just halfway in “Alive” kicks in – and it is one of the most amazing tracks I’ve probably come across, with heavy distorted guitar and drums pounding away over a heavenly voice in the background. Is it Wesley’s? No idea, but it fucking rocks. The final two tracks feel disjoint and different from the album with traces of Metalcore seeping through and some experimental mixing in the process. But the powerhouse screaming is there to compensate for the variation of these tracks. “Visitations” close the track of this rather warped EP, introducing quite possibly the best growls I am likely to hear in a lifetime, with a powerful tone to the guitars and relentless drumming that bring back breakdowns with style.
A trip down a dark alley is likely to have full of surprises. This EP certainly has its fair share; it rewards patience with untold secrets that leak out through the songs of intriguing lyrics and brilliant musicianship.
