Follow the Thrash - 5/5
Thrash Metal can often be defined as a dry object punching you systematically in the face, whilst one its sub genres – Hardcore Thrash Metal – is its inbred son. Massdistraction are a band who link these together on their latest album ‘Follow the Rats’ but make their lesson clear – they’re not here to mess around with, and after stating that they’ll probably get around to systematically punching you in the face.
The band sounds like a cross of Metallica and Your Demise with a cross of everything in-between. They start with the explosive ‘Headgrenade’with frantic guitar skills and David Larsson’s drumming that sounds like chaos and Mikkjal Hansen’s vocals that sounds like he warms up by swallowing sandpaper. ‘See No Evil’ gives the band a more melodic approach whilst ‘Something Violent’ and title track ‘Follow the Rats’ are anthems in their own right for the band whilst remembering to include Kalle Möllerström’s bass. In the meanwhile, the five piece remember to stop destroying your eardrums in the intro of the cliché ‘Sudden Deaf’ until they get bored and continue with the assault. Massdistraction have difficulty in what they want their style to definitively be, especially in the wondrous ‘Sane’ that just appeared out of nowhere, before ending the album on yet another anthem ‘Master Manipulator’, where it sounds like a do-or-die mission, with the overall result sounding like something epic.
The influences and the style of Massdistraction are varied to the degree of being called ‘sporadic’. There’s elements of influences here then a melody that will completely blow you away there. There isn’t one thing I can bring myself to criticize the album – to be frank I love it. And if I didn’t then I’d subject myself to a section of the introduction of this review and end up being systematically punched in the face.
