Three People and a Lot of Talent - 4/5
Let’s just put this one fact aside – the Swindon three piece Mortdelamer don’t want any standard lower than theirs (which is significantly high) in their upcoming EP ‘Words Within the Wire’. Combining powerful female vocals and an alternative tone that sets them apart from the rest, these guys are not to be missed.
The EP opens with a voice sample on ‘Pieces and Reasons’ before an upbeat side to their tone shows Claire Sutton’s brilliant vocals and guitar work along with Joe Bishop on bass and Sean Ivens producing a sinisterly good rhythm section, although everything gets blown out of the water with ‘I’ve got my Backbone’ that contains some brilliant soloing. Mortdelamer ditch the full on rock technique to the more industrial ‘Fade’ whilst still being able to create dynamic chorus’s. Again they decide to experiment on the haunting seven minute ‘The Hide’ that is nothing short of epic. Following the constructed formula of the first two tracks, the three piece opt for a bone crunching finale of ‘Searching for Safety’ that is one of the worst ways of finishing an EP – leaving you wanting a bigger slice of action than the already amazing five track EP.
Mortdelamer don’t just do things conventionally, they do it their way. And their way is of high quality and allowing no bullshit to cross paths with them, which has resulted in an amazing EP. Bands: take note – if you want to do things properly then listen to these guys…
