Everyone Loves Acoustic - 5/5
I shock most people who know me from straying from my metal loving stereotype when I tell them I love folk music and all that comes with it. The solo project “Spoken Life” from Philadelphia, PA by a man called Anthony Irvin has released a six track EP “Truth Be told”. It sounds like it has some sort of political agenda to it, but it doesn’t. It’s an EP with charisma, charming vocals and quite cute guitar licks and solos that sound as though Hendrix himself was there at times.
Opening track “Here and Now” sets the track straight for the entire EP, with a light tone of an acoustic guitar and soothing vocals with little guitar licks here and there. “In the Moment” is an odd one, with backing drums and some of the best acoustic guitar work I’ve heard. It’s an instrumental track that doesn’t exactly fit in with the rest of the tracks, but the track has a beautiful atmosphere that makes it acceptable. “Remember” is a very addicting track, with a picking pattern that could easily work as a soundtrack. I guess all the tracks can serve a purpose of a soundtrack of a romance/rom-com film, as “Signs from Above” and “Until we Meet Again” show, but they have a blend of beauty and sheer awe that sends the listener into their own world. My favourite above all has to be the final track “Dreamers are
Believers” that has its own exquisite philosophical concept around it, with harmonics being overdubbed perfectly and amazing soloing.
One man and one guitar in an absolutely amazing side project –this just goes to show that you don’t need to be metal as fuck nor an egotistical git within the music industry. Just having a way with music and words is the best way to getgoing, as Anthony Irvin has shown.
