One Man's Metalcore Dream - 3/5
Oakdale resident Nolan Hill has embarked on a one man army trip to take over the world with his debut solo release, "Aspiration is a Slowburn". As with most metalcore bands and ideologies, the main principle is blending clean guitar with a stomping breakdown. The first track itself opens up quietly and cleanly, sounding like an influence drawn from Killswitch Engage, before
ripping out a massive breakdown which encourages the primitive spirit that dwells within everyone to explode out and virtually mosh at the expense of their house. Following that is the rip-roaring "The First Step" and "Life Without" which all have very groovy riffs, including the two part "Aspiration is a Slowburn". But in saying this, the album in itself sounds like a band starting out, or the ideas that have been conjured up in an explosion of creativeness. Nolan Hill definitely has these resources, judging from the guitar playing to the berserk drumming, but the material I have heard should not just be played by one guy, but one band to ultimately - and just about literally - take over the world with his music.
