Time for a bit of Fun - 5/5
It’s summer, and everyone is getting burnt to a crisp, which isn’t especially helpful after two months of flash flooding and down pours. Enter the intriguingly happy indie foursome Alaska Campus, who are the undeniably British foursome based from Herfordshire. Drawing influences from the likes of The Smiths and Bombay Bicycle Club, it’s no surprise that their mini album ‘When we were Young’ is pretty darn good…
‘You, Me and the Sun’ opens up with a cheerful guitar melody that quietens for Ryan to begin the song that explodes with indie rock passion. ‘Rosenna’ then introduces the quieter version of the band on the second track through before it goes into a post-hardcore mode of guitars and Liam’s drumming. It’s loud, noisy and just amazing. The Bombay Bicycle Club element is visible in the next track ‘Mon Reve’ with springy guitars and Liam Fossey’s bass lines. ‘The Story of Alaska pt 1’ is mellower than the other tracks, with Ryan’s soothing vocals and an ambient atmosphere around it, before it hurtles itself into more pop-like delight that stands out as impressive as all the other tracks. ‘Control’ is a track that infuses the guitar work of Bombay Bicycle Club and the energy of The Artic Monkeys as a grand farewell to an impressive mini album.
Alaska Campus sound like a band who only know how to have fun and write awesome music, whilst sounding like they have the capability to draw in a massive audience based upon their rich sound. This is a debut mini album of epic proportions, now it’s only time for the LP that’ll probably be even better…
