A Hand in Glory - 5/5
A self-produced album from the six piece Plymouth metallers “Athura” are planning on releasing their debut album “A hand in Death’s Design” on the 30th July. Being recorded over a period of seven months is true dedication, but it had me worried about the quality of the overall sound. But never fear - their sound is relentless, devastating and entirely unforgiving. Calling all live venues: watch your backs…
Opening track “Unlearning” is the first signs of the power of “Athura”, from the pummelling riffs of Jeremy Haddon and Mike Clark on guitars. “Drown What you’ve Become” is by the highlight of the album, with Dave Fletcher’s powerful drumming tearing away with Rhys Jacksons’ bass lines, accompanying the strong guitar riffs once more, with the twin vocal duty of Daniel Bache and Matt Chapman. The vocals are delivered as much pride as they are fierce on the impressive “Plague upon Plague", with dual guitar harmonies over blissful clean vocals and outstanding musicianship and an amazing guitar solo that makes this track worthy of being a single. “Oceans” only gives us a break for a mere few seconds, but builds up over a powerful riffs and drumming with a guest performance from Rikki Bache which is truly magnificent. Following the amazing “Beyond the Pale”, the title track springs out of nowhere, with Jeremy
and Mike delivering crushing riffs over Dave’s drumming on the instrumental track that directs onto the amazing “Fading Will”, with a storming performance from everyone, with powerful drumming, tight rhythm and menacing vocals. Finishing with “Mirrors” that will obliterate any live venue, “Athura” certainly find the energy to create an explosive track to make sure they don’t stop without a fight.
Being a band who “create a modern metal fusion of powerful melody, gut wrenching groove and sophisticated harmony”, “Athura” are certainly
a band not to mess with. Combining all these elements together and conjuring their own signature sound that will help tear down the live music scene – this
is one band to watch out for.
