The Charmers Charming Ep - 4/5
Generally when speaking of reggae, a Rastafarian man appears in our minds whilst potentially smoking a joint of weed and singing ‘Three little Birds’ by the one and only Bob Marley. However, this original reggae roots band hailing from Canterbury contains Ben Russell, who has teamed up with ‘his charmers’ and can be best described as a cross between traditional Bob Marley to the acoustic thumb of Newton Faulkner to create something of an anthemic EP for the Summer.
It starts off with the spaced out introduction of Ben Russell’s Lap Steel guitar to set the listener into a sort of trance before the catchy summer song of “Always Summer Somewhere” leaps out. It isn’t a surprise, it just leaks its way out slowly with Bens voice sounding as a lullaby – it just makes your heart melt, and with Mel Kocak on the keyboard and beautiful backing vocals – most noticeable on ‘criminal’ - to add the special summer sounding flavour instantly makes you fall in love with the Charmers. The whole pattern remains the same throughout the four tracks on the EP, but because of the sole fact that it’s reggae, it creates a nice bond with the listener, therefore allowing the listener to love Ben Russell and the four piece of The Charmers to concoct a potion on love, life and festive filled anthems in the space of a mere 20 minutes.
