It Doesn't Have To Be Metal, Just Brutal - 5/5
Voted as 'The Best Breakthrough Band of 2011', Devonshire
metal band Cambion certainly live up to that title with the release of their
second EP 'Last Rites', combines the sheer brute force of metal as well as a
fascinating combination of smooth vocals and excellent harmonies.
It starts with 'Death March', which does change from an all guns blazing intro and some fantastic shouting from singer and lead guitarist Elliott Alderman-broom. It does hold the same usual metal moments of a song of verse, chorus, verse, chorus etc etc which is all very well for us head bangers out there, but the break of the calm and controlled solo in phenomenal. Although I must not forget that throughout the EP, the general stand out is drummer Frank Dennis with his relentless drumming skills which can be seen as equivalently to mind blowing when analysing any albums or EPs. But then again I can't commit any act of favouritism on songs but address the superbly performed 'Jester' which uses Elliott's clean vocals which leave the listener wanting for more, and 'Salem' does just that for an EP that has hit after hit and songs that all rockers can love, even the Sci Fi 'Quantum Concept' which creates a very spacey feel, and utilises a great use of panning from lead guitarist to rhythm guitarist Liam Neary. Although a great EP, the concept story of 'Virus Part 2 (The Infection)' doesn't really fit into the EP - mostly it's a part 2 of something and people as fussy as myself generally like thing in a chronological order, but it still stands as a good metal track on a very good metal album.
You can call it melodic metal; you can call it Alternative metal or just plain standard metal. But at the end of the day, it's just Cambion with a kickass EP.
