Re-inventing rock music - 4/5
Rock music in this current day and age is missing out – the old days of sex, drink, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll is out of the window, instead being replaced by the same chord breakdowns and a singer screaming about how shit their love life is. But Dark Stares, a St Albans rock quartet, plan on reverting back to the old ways with their debut EP 'Tell Your Friends', bringing the party vibe with them.
The atmosphere of The White Stripes is there during ‘Whisky’, which is just the plain song about taking whisky shots. As it may sound like a song that may possess the same amount of brains as a deck chair does, Dark Stares turn it into something amazing, with Miles Howell giving a fantastic vocal delivery with his brothers Taylor (drums) and Brett (bass) providing the perfect rhythm section and the odd lick from Harry Collins’ lead guitar. ‘Long Live the King’ strays towards a classic rock route spiced in pop rock with Taylors drumming and the excellent guitar playing. The king obsession then links to the more quieter ‘We are the Kings Tonight’ that sounds like something off a Quentin Tarantino sound track, being loud in one part before quieting down, including speeding up before decelerating, before adding some funk rock into the mix as well for good measure. ‘Invaders’ then speeds things up with Taylor’s flawless drumming and Miles’ vocals excelling once more.
In the one and a half years of existence, it’s amazing to hear the quality and maturity in four tracks. Give these guys a medal, it’d be foolish to write them off as wannabe’s, as the four tracks show that this band could be the ressurectionists to the lost art of true rock music.
