Hip hop acoustic crossover - 4/5
Hip hop has never really been the genre that I liked, let alone thought about. But when contacted by Bristolian trio Drewbag, a hip hop band with simply a acoustic guitar, bass and drums over some catchy vocals.
I could not possibly refuse.
It opens with the funky, gypsy folk sounding 'Wheels of Life' that lets rapper Drewbag spit out the catchy and thoughtful lyrics
whilst playing a very influential guitar part whilst being backed up by bassist Lee Llewellyn and Drummer Paul Critchley who play a tight performance throughout the entire EP. The mood then becomes solemn with the second track 'Girl Like You' that introduces a dark guitar and bass part, but having the tongue-in-cheek lyrics of "You must have an angel living in you/ because inside you glow", with some nice bass pumping along to match the mood of the song. The mood gradually brightens towards the end of the EP, the highlight for me being the title track 'Change to Grow', with a lyrically infectious groove which is guaranteed to be a great live song, including the anthemic 'Back to the Days', where Drewbag reminisces on past life, which, just like the whole EP can connect to any part to the life of the listener, which makes this piece of work a definitive piece of work.
