Different from Most - 4/5
The New Britain duo hailing from Connecticut describes their sound as ‘Electro indie rock’. I can’t hear any indie rock throughout the entire album of their latest release “Stone in the Water”, but it has the smooth lovable pop styled grooves to create an album that contradicts my original statement of the genre of Pop being shit and has just made Pop/Electro music rather likeable again.
The 11 track album starts off with ‘Wishing Well’, with Timothy Walsh casually singing a (thankfully) non-clichéd song with Mike Harrison backing him up with some nice tight electro beats. It’s funny how a duo have members that haves no resemblance to the names of ‘Harry & Lloyd”,as well as the general formula being cast over all of the songs. Yet contradiction number two kicks in for me: All songs are set the same but sound differently. A bit like U2 who sing different words over the same song – but I dislike U2, whereas this duo masters the art, with the standout of the title track of ‘Stone in the Water’ and ‘Hey Stranger’ that are tinged with electro goodness and almost guaranteed to make you dance, with Timothy’s vocals just melting over the backing music.
It’s good to finally find some originality within a genre that sounds the same for everything, and with some brilliant songwriting and music like the stuff being produced by Harry & Lloyd, these are certainly two people to keep a close eye on in the future, maybe this is the starting point of where modern music gets back to getting the respect it once deserved.
