Everyone Loves a Party...
“Whatever the Facebook page says, cut it by about at least a third – and that’s the number you’d probably expect” the sound guy at the Jacked Beats first birthday event told me over the deafening roar of the speakers, which packed so much punch it could’ve easily knocked a horse square off its feet. The 300 odd numbers sounded promising, but with an estimation of roughly a 100 going, I can honestly say my heart accomplished a barrel roll. The strangely extravagant turn of events led me to see a number of familiar faces who (a small minority) were obviously too young for a 16+ event with a promise of a “Strict ID search”.
The turnout started off as a bit of a drag for the first part during Optics SoundCrew’s set that was riddled with dirty bass lines, delicious loops and grooves guaranteed to make you jump. Sadly, the small dwindling numbers of the crowd ended up mingling at the side lines. As the volume was turned up, so was the number of dancers who invaded the middle of the hall in a rather hilarious manner – 3/5
Politrix B2B 4SIGHT were the group not to be messed with, providing all the attendees plenty of opportunity to skank – or as someone told me, “Just move your arms and hips and you’ll be fine”, unless you’re me, who has the hand-to-eye coordination of a three legged dog having a stroke. B2B and 4sight happily embraced the music, spitting out lyrics and jumping about the stage – 4/5 (You can catch my interview with Politrix and Jacked Beats at http://soundcloud.com/keithling/jacked-beats-interview)
In all fairness, Miss Grace was the King Cobra that night– beautiful by nature but musically a killer who spat out venomous beats over the MC’s flying rapping after playing House of Pain’s “Jump”, raising the roof high before crashing the bomb onto a floor of heaving, pulsating and sweating bodies as more and more people started coming through the door – 5/5
Maxxi P continued the skanking chaos in a room full of smoke, fancy lights and yet more throbbing bodies who just appeared to have come out of nowhere. But how the hell did the Jacked Beats MC’s keep going? Their frantic rapping never stopped over the rumbling bass and whacky sounds that even Tom Morello couldn’t make up. I’ve come to terms to love a live Drum‘n’ Bass/Dub step/Rave/Whatever you want to call it gig, whilst the MC’s kept in mind that it was Jacked Beats first birthday over the delirious dub step wubbing – 4/5
When the Dub step Don of the South west emerged, very few (if any) knew his name. I know him from being the lead vocalist in Setting Circles, and this was the first time I saw him DJing. But after his performance, Biometrix would have happily allowed Skrillex to sit in the corner of a darkroom to cry in. With a superb remix of “Sound of the Police” and the droning bass on the recently released “Shiva’s Revenge”, Biometrix’s dirty bass lines pummelled the crowd into submission.
After all, he was the Don – 5/5
At midnight, you’d have thought the speakers would have taken a hammering from the sheer volume of music they emitted. Apparently that was not the case for D* Minds who got the rest of the population of the New Market Hotel to rave, jump, sweat and – er – get people to dance with their trousers down to prove how wasted they were. Despite the feedback that rocketed out of the speakers (which did in some respects affect the set) the bass rumbled on louder and louder until the very foundations of the building literally started to shake – 3/5
La Luka was an artist who ended the seven hour birthday bash for Jacked Beats rather well, with low dub step inspired drops to pure rave music mastery. However, after an unfortunate event that took place; his set was halted for roughly 10 minutes before being allowed to continue with loops that sounded like a dolphin having a seizure. Regardless of this, La Luka made sure that what remained of the crowd was having a good time. And damn right they were – 4/5
Jacked Beats are the promoters who are supporting an underground music scene that has basically died in Bridgwater, before reviving it. And celebrating a year since it was founded – they still know how to throw a party.
Even if my dancing was that atrocious.
