Certainly killing something - 0/5
There are bands that I find myself questioning: “Are these people for real?” . Throughout the local music scene there are the good, the bad and the downright abysmal who still manage to get big. Having the chance to support the likes of Rise To Remain, Malefice, Revoker, and Anterior, you would have thought that the new EP “Farewell for the Last Time” from the Dorchester quintet “Kill the Conversation” would be one of mind blowing proportions. I though that only to be proven wrong - it turns out to be worse than the entire Nickelback discography put together.
It starts off with “Fold”, a traditional clean sound with a suspenseful drum beat to it before it explodes into the painful vocals of Jack England, and a weird screeching sound behind that sounds like an eagle gurgling glass. With that is the down tuned guitars with a mediocre tone to them that only want to play three chords (seeing as playing four chords in a rock band is steering close towards jazz). The only good part is the clean playing chords and the post hardcore influence, but even so it’s just the pain of having to survive with the vocal delivery. “Shattered Shell” just sounds like it’s just been constructed from thin air with no structure and harmonizing guitars that litter it, with Brad Birchall’s drumming being the only good thing about it. “No More Fish in the Sea” just stretches the OTT border, with Jack England sounding as though he’s in dire need of a throat lozenge, with unclear vocals that can only be transcribed by their music video which happens to be a worse love song than the whole Twilight Saga. “Blakes Demise” and “City in Ruins” are, to be frank, appalling following a traditional blend of what thousands of other bands sound alike.
There’s no original sound to it, the production being set to a “Just about acceptable” standard, and a band left in a whirlpool trying to standout from others that have the same sounding songs and tones, and with this EP it’s just the drumming that’s decent to listen to. If I happen to hear another record to be described as “Brutal” I’ll scream and lose all of my hair.Unless it’s referenced on Metalocalypse – Metalocalypse’s awesome.
