No Quirky Title Needed - 5/5
Post/Melodic Hardcore is a genre that I have just recently been introduced to by Exeter based band Fel Fiasco. It’s quite an odd genre, with every musician within that band attempting to give their all, which can result in either a sprawling trail of ideas of a success that most people would not have heard of. From the melodic hardcore five piece hailing from North Wales, Ocean City have released the five track EP ‘Ocean City Eschatology’. And it’s one of those pieces that make you think: “Why the bloody hell aren’t these guys famous?”
With a beautiful intro of the first track ‘Arowana’ that begins with a lovely bit of guitar and a violin sample before everything explodes, from the vocal delivery of Ross Bevan and the progressive playing by lead guitarist Fraser Cripps, and an amazing vocal contribution by Laura Whiteside that sums the whole track up with intricate lead sections and a power house of drumming by SeanWheldon. Each song brings something new to the table, from the anthemic second
track ‘Rescue' which is riddled with pop hooks and still focus’ on the vocal delivery and the guitar driven sections. ‘Snowbird’ is a track which does take a few listens to get into (I have to admit), but it doesn’t stop the tight rhythm of rhythm guitarist and bassist Will Saunt and Jack Weigh. I generally have a thing against pointless interludes on EPs, but ‘The Calm Before the Storm’ changes my mind rather quickly, before the amazing ‘Vodka Dreams’, which words cannot describe the infectious lyrics and anthemic chorus to the wondrous guitar tone, which is one that most guitarists would quite likely die for.
A fine debut EP by the quintet, but as always, EPs are just a taster of things to come. At this rate, an album by this band will be one to definitely keep an eye out for, and one that will most likely to be one to literally just blow you away at epic proportions.
