An Unexpected Surprise
Having a photographer believing that you left them at the train station, and then turning up at the wrong venue on the other side of Bristol with about 10 minutes to spare does involve having a chaotic night in unchartered territory in Bristol. The Croft is one of those venues that’s born and bred with punk and rock music, so how hard can covering a show there be?
First up on the bill were ‘Here Lies A Warning’. Imagine having a Scottish version of ‘The Ghost Inside’ with twice as much power, and it would most likely end up being these guys. The vocals and the layout of their songs may be vastly reminiscent to the metalcore genre along with the guitarists doing their best at being on-stage actors, but the sheer quantity of energy unleashed and a few minor attempts at having to mosh certainly proved a winner.
First was the Scottish, then it was time of battle with the Welsh band ‘When We Were Wolves’, and all I have to say to them is simple – Oh my fucking god. Piggie-back wall of deaths, an attempt of playing Slayer, more ferocious moshing and a blazing, vibrant wall of energy. Trust the Welsh to try and steal the show. Oh no, wait, they did… 5/5
After Inimisus dropped out (reasons unspecified) Ruins Will Rise invaded the stage with ‘The Inbetween’ before claiming various parts of the floor in a non-discrete manner, with vocalist Dan Smullen throwing himself into what was left of the crowd to playing a new song that didn’t particularly succeed due to technical reasons. But still, the power was there and they did all their best to supply it – 4/5
The music scene in Bristol is certainly vibrant, with The Croft holding two gigs at exactly the same time. At the end, recovering from wounds such as being punched in the face, it’s good to tell that you can quite gladly go to see energetic performances to the point of feeling as though you’re about to die, and then leaving to tell the tale.
Overall rating – 4/5
