The Beast Inside
Over-priced drinks and cocky security guards sum up the Bristol o2 academy, along the lines of seeing only two people in the queue, and that made me think to myself: “The turnout to this is going to be abysmal”. Although with more people entering the building, it didn’t look as doomed to fail after all…
The Cutoffs were quite literally on fire opening up for Tom Hingley, with punk laden riffs powered by energetic drumming and Elliot Winter’s charismatic frontman skills with the skills of a singer familiar to a DIY indie scene. In a nutshell, you couldn’t ask for a better opening act – 4/5
The upstairs confinement of the Bristol o2 was a bit too small for the sonic landscape the Inspiral Carpets generate on their albums, especially with Tom Hingley touring with ‘The Beast Inside’ with The Lovers, which was one of their lesser acclaimed albums. Even if they had constantly travelled to tour, it didn’t stop Tom and his powerful voice, and occasionally pounding at the barriers like a berserk, whilst taking breaks to rather odd speech clips– one of which being Davros from Doctor Who – 4/5
The gig turned out much better than originally expected –bar the annoying security guards and most things being over-priced to the extent they could be classed as extortion. But at the end of the night, everything worked out according to plan and even got the chance to catch up with Tom Hingley himself, and the best of luck with the tour and his new book “Carpet Burns”.
Overall rating – 4/5
