Indie with a Northern Soul - 4/5
It sounds like the offspring between The Kinks and the Artic Monkeys. No, I’m not talking about some absurd abomination of music, but of Darlington five piece “White Rose” with their EP Fanimal. It’s an EP that’s a grower, it just keeps getting better and better and better…
With Danny Miller opening up “You’ve Never Tasted Tears” on a solid bass line and Jack Turner giving a surreal vocal performance which sounds like a mix between Pink Floyd and Artic Monkeys, with a rich guitar tone progressing throughout the track. Following this track has to be my highlight of the EP “Talking to a Timebomb”, with perfect musicianship all round with Danny stealing the limelight with his perfect bass lines missing with Danny Turnbull on drums, before Jack and lead guitarist Ben Lee-Warner battling it out on superb and solid riffs and yet more deliciously rich guitar tones. “Lay Down” sounds like a creation of the Artic Monkeys and The Stone Roses, with Jack giving a fantastic vocal delivery, building up to something spectacular, with Ben delivering yet more brilliant progressive guitar lines. “Black Magic Box” is like time travel to the 70’s, something old colliding with something modern to create a groovy track to merrily dance to. Ending on “Melanie's Melancholy”,The Stone Roses influence is at its peak, with amazing lyrics and catchy acoustic guitar and soothing backing vocals.
These guys define themselves as “Indie Rock with a Northern Soul”. That statement just about sums the EP up. With fantastic lyrics, amazing guitar playing and a solid rhythm section, these boys are guaranteed to get far.
